Esther: The reluctant heroine
Esther, is the main female character from the town of Beaumont in Audessia. She's described as having a small build, thick, long, curly black hair, intense black-blue eyes, and pale skin. During childhood, Esther was plagued with nightmares that waned as the years passed, but recently they have returned and beginning to feel all too real. Having not known her biological parents she was raised by her stepmother, Perry, the two moving frequently from town to town, eventually settling on the cold and dreary Beaumont, where the two own and run its only inn, the Cracked Saddle. Esther met Louise in her library, and their mutual interests led them to creating Book Club, in which Jeanne joined soon after. Esther keeps her interests in fantasy and magic quiet from Perry as to not upset her but begins to believe that secrets are being kept when she finds and steals a grimoire found in her stepmother's chambers.
Asher: The demon lord of Noxith
Asher, an ill-tempered, aloof demon from Noxith and the main male character is accidentally summoned to Audessia by Esther. He possesses dark silver wavy hair, striking black horns, and onyx eyes, with fair skin and a lean but strong build. Asher holds a unique position as one of five demon lords of Noxith, and the only one to have been born human before given the title. Though his human origins should deem him weak, Asher is objectively the strongest among the lords, infuriatingly so. Asher begrudgingly works with Esther for his own benefit initially, the dynamic eventually shifting with time and trust.
Louise: The intellectual librarian
Louise is the town librarian and Esther's closest friend. After the sudden death of her parents, she seeks answers to lingering questions. Highly intelligent and passionate, Louise has a secret love for fantasy and witchcraft, subjects largely shunned in Audessia. She is a founding member of Book club, where Esther and Jeanne frequently meet at Louise's library to discuss rare and "abhorred" books on magic, much to Jeanne's dismay, who would rather be reading more practical books. Louise is supposedly descended from a Witch and wears a keepsake around her neck depicting two crescent moons facing outward with a ruby snug between them.
Perry: The outspoken innkeeper
Perry is Esther's stepmother, a strong, outspoken, and sultry woman who runs the local inn, The Cracked Saddle. While she fiercely loves Esther, she's also a "terrible" stepmother in practice, often leaving Esther to largely raise herself. Perry enjoys the company of men and has a different partner regularly. Perry abhors magic and the like and insists that Esther stay well clear of it, yet it is discovered that she has a grimoire stashed in her chambers, for reasons yet known.
Jeanne: The loyal brawler
Jeanne is a close friend to both Louise and Esther, and the daughter of a wealthy merchant. She is known for her loyalty and quick temper. Despite her educated background, Jeanne enjoys a good brawl and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. Jeanne is described as dark-skinned with thick dark brown hair and hazel eyes and is tall with an athletic frame. She has an on-off relationship with a bartender who works at Perry's inn, The Cracked Saddle, and devotes a lot of her time, attention and coin to bettering his health. Jeanne is one of three members in Book Club but is not as invested in fantasy and witchcraft as her two friends.
